Project Details

Currently, approximately 200 children, ages 6-18, live in Orr Shalom’s 22 family group homes throughout the country. These homes close four times a year – for Sukkot, Chanukah, Pesach and for three weeks in August. Most of the children spend these vacations with their biological families, extended families or host families. These relationships are often essential to the healing and growing process for the children. However, about 45 of the children are either orphans with no family, or come from situations so violent, abusive or dysfunctional that they cannot go home. Without proper supervision and care, they are in danger of reverting to the same self-destructive behavioral patterns that they had before coming to Orr Shalom. Even worse, they risk returning to the same horrific environments from which they were removed. At Orr Shalom’s Safe Haven overnight camp, the children are loved, wanted and important. Here, they receive educational and enrichment programming together with the therapeutic care that they need year-round, even when the family group homes are closed. The camp provides a safe, structured and loving environment, as well as great fun and enrichment opportunities. We rely entirely on the generosity of our donors to fund this essential program. We are currently raising money for our sukkot Safe Haven came to ensure that these 45 children have a safe place to be.

Established in 1980, Orr Shalom is a non-profit organization that rescues Israel’s children who have been removed from their homes by the social welfare services following severe abuse, neglect and tragedy.  By providing safe, loving homes and educational, psychological and material support, Orr Shalom enables the children in its care to break the cycle of abuse, overcome their pasts and prepare for life as independent adults.  Today, 1,430 children live in Orr Shalom foster families and homes across Israel where they can receive professional help, unconditional love and an opportunity for a better future. We are proud to report that during 2013 we received the Israeli Presidential Award for Volunteerism from President Shimon Peres.
